Birmingham has been challenging and developing great minds for more than a century. Micrometeorologists study surface-atmosphere exchange at time scales ranging from fractions of seconds through inter-annual and spatial scales on the order of 100-1000’s of meters. The research conducted at McGill is field-based, observational and process driven; it focuses on the transfers of greenhouse gases, water and heat driven by near-surface turbulent exchange from a variety of natural and human-influenced ecosystems. Students can study towards both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Collaboration exists with colleagues in other McGill Departments as well as other University, Government and Private partners.

In the micromet group, we are interested in exploring the following questions:
What is the role of the land surface as a climate forcing factor?
What are the atmospheric processes and feedbacks that control land-atmosphere exchange?
How do we model regional exchange of greenhouse gases?
How effective are forests and agricultural soils at sequestering carbon?
What controls thermal comfort in humans and other animals?

The Department of Micrometeorology, headed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Foken from 1997 to 2014, has been under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Christoph Thomas since the 1st of October 2014. This web page will be updated with information of new publications and the research results of former projects. The same will be done for software updates. The Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences balances teaching and research to expand and apply knowledge in the geosciences to help fulfill the land grant mission of Iowa State University. Established in 1898 as a geology and mining engineering department and merged with atmospheric sciences in 1964, the department has 17 faculty members, ~40 graduate students, and ~180 undergraduates in two programs: geology and meteorology.

OUR MISSION
Comprised of approximately 70 staff and an ever-revolving group of visiting researchers, the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology (MMM) Laboratory has the mission to advance the understanding of the meso- and microscale aspects of weather and climate, and to apply this knowledge to benefit society.
