There are many benefits that can be had through the use of technologies in education. Technology can be used both to stimulate and continue learning, building lifelong habits of learning in those willing to take advantage of what technology can offer as a tool for enhancing educational opportunities.

I think a good definition is this: a self-directed and evolving environment of tools, services and resources organized by a person seeking a way to accomplish lifetime learning, to create, and to connect with others of similar interests.

Personal learning environment (PLE) describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms learners use to direct their own learning and pursue educational goals.[1] The PLE approach is based on a learner-centred view of learning and differs fundamentally from the alternative Learning Management System or Virtual Learning Environments approach both of which are based on an institution- or course-centred view of learning. Van Harmelen describes Personal Learning Environments as systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to
set their own learning goals
manage their learning; managing both content and process
communicate with others in the process of learning
and thereby achieve learning goals.

While PLEs are commonly created using specific technologies and tools, such as online-resource organizers like Symbaloo or EverNote, the model is not wedded to a specific technology but rather to a process that aims to visualize and organize the influx of information and resources that students are confronted with daily. It is essentially an educational response to the overload of information in the digital age.

The brief explores the concepts of personal learning environments, learning, and data analytics and the art of the possible. During the brief, each of these topics will be discussed along with some thoughts to a series of exploratory questions surrounding these topics. The intent is for the audience to walk away with a general understanding of personal learning environments and the use of data analytics to drive a true personal learning experience.
